NURS6842 PMHNP Practicum: II is the middle 225 hours of Graceland University's PMHNP track, taken after NURS6841 and before the final practicum. It is the term to take stock: count the patients you have seen by age group, decide whether your Practicum: I preceptor stays or a new one steps in, and refile paperwork that does not carry over.

The PMHNP program page still lists 200 hours for each practicum, part of an older split that put 150 hours in NURS5430. The handbook, updated September 10, 2026, is the current word; the NURS5430 page sets the versions side by side. If your plan shows a different figure, ask the PMHNP track coordinator which one applies to you.
The pediatrics prerequisite and your age count
NURS6842 sits behind NURS5665 Diagnosis and Management II (Pediatrics) in the catalog, just as Practicum: I sits behind the adult and geriatric course. Graceland does not assign an age group to any single practicum. What it sets is the finish line: about 300 encounters across the track, 100 with patients under 18, 100 with patients over 65 and 100 with patients aged 18 to 64.
That makes the start of Practicum: II the right moment to total your Practicum: I encounters by age band. If most of them were working-age adults, the next two practicums need to carry nearly all of the children and older adults, and the final one is too late to discover a gap of 80 adolescents. Sites that serve families or children, such as child and adolescent psychiatry practices or community mental health programs with a youth caseload, can suit this term well.
Older adults are the other band worth planning on purpose. Geriatric psychiatry services and practices that consult in long-term care settings can fill it. Before you commit, ask the lead faculty for the PMHNP practicum courses how they want encounters logged in Typhon by age, so your tally matches theirs.
Keep your preceptor or bring in a new one
Graceland limits any one preceptor to two of the three practicum terms and requires at least two different preceptors across the track. That turns Practicum: II into a fork. Keep your Practicum: I psychiatrist or PMHNP, and the final practicum must go to someone else. Change now, and your Practicum: II preceptor can carry on into the final term if the age mix allows it.
Each practicum can have up to two preceptors, with one of them primary. Adding a second preceptor partway through needs its own Appendix B and approval, and Graceland accepts no requests for additional second preceptors in the two weeks before the term begins. A single substitute at your primary site can cover up to 40 hours in a term without new paperwork; beyond that, hours only count once the substitute is approved.
Once a preceptor has agreed and the paperwork is in, Graceland asks you not to cancel, since every change adds work for the contract coordinators. The changing or adding a preceptor page covers the details.
Paperwork that resets for this term
Nothing from Practicum: I carries over automatically. Appendix B is filed again each term, even when the preceptor is the same person. Appendix A goes in again for each site and address you will use this term. If your preceptor works in three offices, Graceland counts that as three Appendix A requests, one Appendix B, three site contracts and three approval emails.
Items to recheck before Practicum: II starts
- TB screening, which must fall within the last 12 months and is renewed each year
- Influenza vaccination, due no later than January 31 and renewed from November 1
- Personal health insurance, uploaded front and back and renewed yearly
- CPR certification and your RN license verification for every practicum state
- Your Practicum: I preceptor evaluations in Typhon; Graceland can block progress in a course when evaluations are not completed on time

Timing rules that bite in the middle term
Only one practicum runs per trimester, and all practicum courses in a track must be taken within 12 months of each other. An incomplete in NURS6841 must be finished before you can move on, which pushes Practicum: II back a full term, and sitting out a term to wait for a preceptor costs roughly four months toward graduation.
Plan 16 to 24 clinic hours a week and aim to be done by week 14. A random midterm site visit can be arranged between your preceptor and the instructor, and your preceptor validates your time logs at regular intervals. Questions Graceland students ask
Can my NURS6841 preceptor also precept NURS6842?
Yes. A Graceland preceptor may cover up to two of the three practicum terms, so staying on for Practicum: II is allowed. The trade-off is that your final practicum, NURS6843, must then be precepted by someone else, because Graceland requires at least two different preceptors across the track. A new Appendix B is still needed for the new term.
Do I have to see 100 children in NURS6842?
Graceland does not say so. The handbook sets about 100 encounters per practicum and 300 in total, split into 100 under 18, 100 over 65 and 100 aged 18 to 64, without assigning an age group to a specific course. Practicum: II follows the pediatrics course, which makes it a natural place to build the under-18 count. Confirm expectations with the course's lead faculty.
What if my Practicum: II preceptor quits partway through the term?
Tell the contract coordinators at soncontracts@graceland.edu right away. A substitute at your primary site can cover up to 40 hours in a term without an Appendix B, which buys time while a replacement is approved. Can NURS6842 be done mostly by telehealth?
Possibly. PMHNP students may log up to two terms or 450 hours of telehealth in total. Both you and the preceptor need a license in each patient's state at the time of the visit, with compact licenses covering compact states. Using a telehealth term here leaves less room later, so plan all three practicums before you commit.
Does Practicum: II have a focus session?
Not by itself. The PMHNP focus session is tied to NURS5196, the competencies lab that comes before Practicum: I. The handbook describes it as virtual, usually in week 6 or 7, while the course description still mentions the Independence campus. Check the notice the School of Nursing emails before your session.
