Can't find a preceptor for your Graceland University practicum
Say so now, in writing. Graceland University's handbook tells students who are struggling to reach their course's lead faculty and the contract coordinators well ahead of the deadline, and at least two weeks before it. Then rebuild the search around the rules that decide approval, start with clinicians Graceland already knows, and bring in more hands if the calendar is short.

Tell Graceland early, in writing
Graceland describes the search as shared work. Practicums are the student's to arrange, with Graceland's assistance, and the practicum flowchart shows the Graduate Practicums Coordinator helping the student locate a preceptor. The handbook is specific about what to do when that stalls: reach out to your course's lead faculty, a contract coordinator, or both, at soncontracts@graceland.edu, well before your paperwork deadline.
Paperwork for Fall is due in mid-June, for Spring in mid-October and for Summer in mid-February, and Graceland wants to hear from you at least two weeks ahead of yours if you still have no site. Write from your Sting email with your track, course, term, city and the clinics you have already approached; the handbook calls communication key to the process. Start with what Graceland already has
Graceland's online database, the one it uses for practicum records, lists how to reach preceptors and sites it has already approved, and students are welcome to use the ones near them. These clinicians already know Graceland's forms and evaluations, and their sites may already hold an affiliation agreement, which can shorten the road to approval. Each still files a new Appendix B for your term. Ask the Graduate Practicums Coordinator or the lead faculty which approved preceptors near you are taking students this term.

Why Graceland searches stall
- Asking clinicians who cannot qualify. Physician assistants, FNPs for a PMHNP practicum, urgent care or hospitalist clinicians for FNP
NURS6740andNURS6760, and primary care offices for AGACNP all lead nowhere, however willing they are. - Knocking on the wrong door at a large system. The University of Kansas Health System has paired students with preceptors centrally at its main campus since March 2026 and accepts Fall requests between February 1 and April 30. UnityPoint Health - Des Moines wants acute care and psychiatric NP applications by February 1 for Fall.
- Starting too late. Graceland warns that the lead time can run a year or longer before a first practicum, because site contracts are slow to finish.
- Relying on one or two asks. A single unanswered email can cost weeks, so keep several conversations going at once.
- Fishing in ruled-out waters. Your own unit, relatives and anyone in your reporting line cannot precept you; use them for introductions instead.

A search plan built on Graceland's rules

- Map a realistic radiusGraceland publishes no mileage limit, but hours must be in an approved state where you hold an RN license, and 16 to 24 hours a week means a drive you can repeat for 14 weeks.
- Ask everyone you knowGraceland urges students to put the question to everyone they know; ask for introductions to clinicians outside your own unit and family.
- Check each system's student processLearn whether the organization uses a central office, software or an application window before you approach an individual clinician.
- Lead with the essentialsShare your course, dates, weekly hours and Graceland's one-page Preceptor Information and Responsibilities handout so a clinician can decide quickly.
- Plan the second preceptor nowTwo different preceptors are the minimum across your three practicums, so keep promising names for later terms.
- File as soon as someone agreesSubmit Appendix A online through myGraceland and send the preceptor the Appendix B link the same day.
If the term is close
With the deadline only weeks away, switch to speed: parallel asks, sites Graceland already works with, and a clear note to the contract coordinators about where you stand. Need a preceptor fast is built for that stretch.
If the deadline is going to pass with no site, the handbook says the practicum may be delayed and asks you to get in touch two weeks beforehand to see whether help or an extension is possible. Otherwise the completion plan is rearranged with Program Advising, usually with another course taken that term, which pushes the completion date out. Each skipped term adds roughly four months before you graduate; delayed graduation explains how to keep that to a minimum. Questions Graceland students ask
Is Graceland responsible for finding my preceptor?
It is shared. The 2026 handbook says Graceland and its students collaborate to locate preceptors and sites, and it describes practicums as arranged by the student with Graceland's assistance. The 2017 and 2018 handbooks said students were required to locate preceptors themselves. Either way, a contract coordinator and/or lead faculty approves every preceptor and site.
How far from home can my Graceland practicum be?
Graceland publishes no mileage limit for graduate practicums. Your hours must be in the United States or its territories, in an approved state where you hold an unencumbered RN license, and the preceptor must be licensed where the site is. In practice, 16 to 24 hours a week for most of a trimester sets the limit.
Can I start looking for a preceptor a year ahead?
Yes, and Graceland encourages it; its handbook suggests beginning as much as twelve months or more ahead of the first practicum. Paperwork is not processed early, though. Submissions wait until the term before the practicum, so secure the preceptor early and file Appendix A when that window opens.
Who is the Graduate Practicums Coordinator?
It is the role Graceland's practicum flowchart names as helping students find a preceptor. The handbook also refers to contract coordinators and does not say whether these are the same role. Start with soncontracts@graceland.edu, the mailbox Graceland asks students to use for all practicum email, and ask who is helping with your search.
What if few preceptors take students where I live?
Widen the radius within your approved state, start with sites Graceland has approved before, and check whether the larger systems nearby run central student offices with set windows. Your state's guide, reached from the state guides, covers the board, compact status and systems worth knowing.
