Need a preceptor fast for a Graceland University practicum?

When a Graceland University paperwork deadline or practicum start is close and you still have no preceptor, do two things the same day: tell the contract coordinators, and set a course-matched search in motion. Graceland asks for notice at least two weeks before the deadline. The next deadline is October 15, 2026, for practicums starting January 4, 2027.

What makes a fast placement possible at Graceland

Speed at Graceland comes from choosing sites whose paperwork can move quickly, not only from finding a willing clinician. A preceptor whose practice is already under contract with Graceland, working from one address with an obvious signer, gets through the contract step with the least delay.

Hospitals with application windows or committee reviews rarely suit a short runway. Our guide to hospital request systems shows Kansas City and Des Moines windows that close months before the term they serve.

Course fit still decides approval, and a quick yes from the wrong kind of clinician costs more time than it saves. NURS6740 and NURS6760 need primary care, AGACNP practicums need hospital or specialist settings, and PMHNP students can only use psychiatrists or PMHNP-certified nurse practitioners. When the deadline cannot be met

Graceland says late paperwork can delay the practicum. The two ways forward are an extension, which is why the two-week notice matters, or a revised completion plan through Program Advising (programadvising@graceland.edu), where you take a different course that term.

A delay has knock-on effects. Graceland wants every practicum in a track completed inside a 12-month span, and it estimates that every term sat out moves graduation back about four months. The delayed graduation page explains how to plan around it.

Keep the search going while you talk to Graceland. A preceptor secured now can anchor the following term even if this one slips, and starting early for that term is exactly what the handbook recommends.

Already in the term?

A preceptor who withdraws after the term starts is a different problem with its own rules. Graceland lets a single stand-in cover as much as 40 hours a term at your main site before an Appendix B is needed, and it closes the door on new second-preceptor requests once a term is two weeks away, so timing shapes your options. Tell the contract coordinators the day it happens: they monitor every preceptor change, and a replacement needs its own approval before its hours count.

If you are mid-course, go to preceptor dropped out or behind on clinical hours. Faculty want practicum hours wrapped up by week 14, so every week without a preceptor narrows the margin.

Can Graceland extend my practicum paperwork deadline?

Graceland's handbook invites students to reach out two weeks ahead of the due date, when the coordinators may be able to help or extend it. Nothing there promises an extension, so send that email early to soncontracts@graceland.edu and keep your search going while you wait for an answer.

How close to a practicum can I still find a preceptor?

Graceland sets no minimum, but the paperwork deadline falls about ten to eleven weeks before the term, and every site needs a signed affiliation agreement before any clinical activity. The closer you are, the more it helps to use sites that already have an agreement with Graceland.

Can I use a preceptor at my own workplace to save time?

Sometimes. Graceland bars practicums on the unit where you work and preceptors who supervise you or report to you, but a different clinical area inside a big health system may qualify. Our page on a practicum at your workplace explains what the coordinators check.

What if I find a preceptor after the deadline has passed?

Contact the contract coordinators straight away with the preceptor and site details. Whether the placement can still count for the coming term is Graceland's decision; if it cannot, that preceptor can anchor your next practicum while Program Advising adjusts your completion plan.
