Graceland University's post-graduate FNP certificate: fewer courses, the same 750 hours
Graceland University's post-graduate Family Nurse Practitioner certificate is designed for nurses holding a master's in nursing. It trims the coursework to about 35 credits, depending on the source and your transcript, but keeps the full FNP clinical sequence: NURS6740, NURS6760 and NURS6830, 750 hours in all. Preceptor placement runs by exactly the rules MSN students follow.

Who the certificate is for
To apply you need a nursing master's, an MSN or MN, from a program accredited by NLNAC or CCNE. The certificate does not lead to a second degree; those who complete it qualify to take national certification exams. That makes it the route for a nurse with a master's in another field, or an NP certified in another population, who wants to add family practice.
Classes run online, and FNP students meet for the focus session on Zoom, so there is no campus trip. You have six years to finish.
Graceland's catalog lists its post-graduate APRN certificates among the programs CCNE accredits, and the Iowa Board of Nursing's list of approved programs includes Graceland's post-graduate certificate. Washington's nursing commission separately approves the post-graduate FNP certificate for practice experiences in that state.
How many credits: three Graceland sources, three answers
Graceland's documents do not agree on the certificate's credit total, and the number that applies to you depends on your transcript anyway.

Graceland also notes that core requirements can vary with the school where you earned your earlier degree, and alumni of another Graceland NP program may need less. Program Advising (programadvising@graceland.edu) builds each certificate student's plan, so ask for yours in writing before you count credits.
The handbook's certificate listing also carries older credit values for a few courses, including NURS6830 at 4 where the catalog says 5.
The courses you will take
The FNP specialty is the heart of the certificate, and it is the same set of courses MSN students take.

Depending on the courses you bring, the core may add NURS5010, advanced pathophysiology (NURS5440), pharmacotherapeutics (NURS5100) and advanced health assessment with diagnostic reasoning (NURS5143). The Zoom focus session spans two to three full days, most often in the sixth or seventh week of the trimester, and its dates reach you by email well ahead of time.
Clinical hours: the full sequence
The certificate carries the complete FNP practicum load. If your Graceland start date is August 1, 2023 or later, plan on 750 hours, with Pediatrics and Adult at 225 apiece and Family at 300; students who started before then work to the 600-hour plan. No Graceland source trims those hours for students who already hold a master's degree or an APRN license in another population.
Every MSN practicum rule carries over. The pediatric and adult courses stay inside primary care clinics; the Family course keeps half or more of its time in primary care and caps specialty time at 150 hours; your patient total has to match your hour total; and the three practicums run one per trimester inside a 12-month span. Preceptor questions for experienced nurses
If you already work in an advanced role, read the workplace rules closely. Graceland rules out training on your own unit and rules out any preceptor who supervises you or works under you, and the preceptor must have no direct personal or professional tie to you. A different clinical area inside a big health system can still qualify (practicum at your workplace).
Colleagues are the tricky case. A fellow NP you work beside every day may count as a direct professional relationship, so check with the contract coordinators before you ask. Graceland encourages students to ask everyone they know when searching, and that is where a professional network helps most: people you know, at clinics where you do not work.
Preceptor standards are identical for certificate students: a master's-prepared NP with a year or more of practice, or a primary care physician with board certification or eligibility. Two or more different preceptors must appear across your three practicums, and physician assistants are excluded; the who cannot precept you page covers every exclusion.
Timing your first practicum
A shorter course list can bring the first practicum up quickly, which leaves less runway for the preceptor search. Graceland's handbook suggests some students begin as much as a year before their first practicum, so start looking as soon as your plan shows the practicum term.
Your Appendix A, your preceptor's Appendix B and a current Castle Branch record are due by June 15 ahead of Fall, October 15 ahead of Spring and February 15 ahead of Summer. Finish the background check before your first term ends, and take the drug screen in the four-to-six-week window before the first practicum begins. The practicum deadlines page has every date.
Licensure is checked on two fronts: your RN license must be unencumbered where you live and in any state where your practicum hours happen, proven by board verification, since Graceland no longer accepts a photocopy.

How many credits is Graceland's post-graduate FNP certificate?
The 2026-27 catalog says 35 semester hours. The FNP program page lists a 13-credit core and a specialty labeled 28, and the handbook treats NP certificates as complete at 33 credits with 13 or more earned at Graceland. Your own total depends on the courses you bring, so Program Advising sets it in your individual plan.
Do FNP certificate students need fewer clinical hours if they are already NPs?
No Graceland source reduces practicum hours for certificate students. The certificate uses the same three FNP practicums as the MSN, so a student whose start date is August 1, 2023 or later completes 750 hours. Earlier coursework can shorten the classroom side of the plan; the clinical side stays whole.
Is the FNP certificate focus session on campus?
No. Graceland's catalog says FNP focus sessions are held virtually on Zoom, tied to NURS5194. Only AGACNP students attend a focus session on the Independence campus. Plan for two to three full days, typically in the sixth or seventh week of the trimester, and block them with your employer early.
Can a colleague at my clinic precept me for the FNP certificate?
Only if Graceland's rules allow it. The handbook bars your own unit, your supervisor, anyone you supervise and anyone tied to you personally or professionally. A preceptor working in a different part of a large system could be approved. Ask the contract coordinators before you file Appendix A.
Is Graceland's FNP certificate available in my state?
The School of Nursing admits NP students only from states where Graceland is approved for practicum experiences, and it asks you to check your state with the school directly.
