Finding NP preceptors in the Kansas City metro
Kansas City spans two states, so a Graceland University practicum there follows Missouri rules on one side of the line and Kansas rules on the other. The largest systems publish their own student processes on their own calendars, and some of those windows close months before Graceland's paperwork deadlines, so a Kansas City search has to start early and cover both sides.

One metro, two sets of rules
Graceland's School of Nursing is based on the Independence campus, about 20 minutes from Kansas City, Missouri, and many online students live somewhere in the metro. A clinic ten minutes away may sit in either state, and the state is decided by the practicum site's address, not your home address.
Your license has to follow the site. Graceland wants board-verified proof of an unencumbered RN license for each approved state where you log hours. Missouri's compact membership dates to January 19, 2018 and Kansas's to July 1, 2019, which lets a multistate RN license issued by your compact home state reach a clinic in either one; confirm the plan with the contract coordinators.
The preceptor's license matters too. On the Missouri side, NPs practice under written collaborative arrangements with physicians, which the Missouri collaborative practice page explains. On the Kansas side, the Kansas State Board of Nursing wants an APRN clinical preceptor to be oriented, bound by a signed agreement, and licensed in Kansas as an APRN in the same role you are training for, a standard it ties to K.A.R. 60-17-104.
The University of Kansas Health System's published process
This is the health system's own policy for students from any program, not an arrangement with Graceland. Its graduate nursing and APP placement page says its advanced practice providers, physicians and nurse leaders can serve as preceptors when feasible, and that the 39th and Rainbow campus switched to central matching of students with preceptors in March 2026.
Under that process, students are asked not to reach out to individual preceptors, and the request has to originate with the school, or with the student when the school tells them to submit it. The system also warns that preceptors are scarce in psychiatry or mental health, pediatrics, women's health and family medicine. Its Olathe and Paola locations take requests 60 days to 6 months before the rotation and currently place no students in women's health or pediatrics.

The window for a Fall practicum closes about six weeks before Graceland's June 15 deadline, so the request must be in months earlier than the rest of your paperwork. Graceland's handbook tells you to flag any site with its own placement software or request procedure to the contract coordinator; sites with their own request systems explains what happens next.
Emailing a KU Health System preceptor directly at 39th and Rainbow goes against the system's published process. Route the request the way the process and the contract coordinator direct.
Children's Mercy Kansas City
Children's Mercy publishes a nursing clinical placement page, again as its own policy for visiting students. It lists the hospital's clinical affiliation standards for schools of nursing, its requirements for students and observers, and training materials for students. Its advanced practice pages show family nurse practitioners and psychiatric mental health nurse practitioners among its providers, but no step-by-step NP-student request process was found.
Match any pediatric site to Graceland's course rules. NURS6740 FNP Practicum: Pediatrics must be in primary care with a pediatrician, pediatric NP or FNP, and allows no specialty hours; specialty time fits only NURS6830, up to 150 hours. PMHNP students need a psychiatrist or certified PMHNP preceptor and 100 patients under 18 across their practicums.
Beyond the large systems
Many Kansas City practicums happen in independent practices, community clinics and specialty groups that post no student page at all. There the practice itself is where the conversation starts, and the contract coordinator sends the affiliation agreement once you submit Appendix A. A practice with several offices needs an Appendix A and a site contract for each address you will work at.
Graceland keeps contact information for preceptors and sites it has already approved in its online database, so ask the Graduate Practicums Coordinator which Kansas City entries match your course. Graceland's standards travel with you: nurse practitioners need a master's in nursing and a year or more in practice, physicians need board certification or eligibility, physician assistants are excluded, and your own unit and your supervisor are off the table. Questions Graceland students ask
Can I live in Missouri and do my practicum in Kansas?
Yes, if Graceland approves the site and your RN license reaches Kansas. Missouri and Kansas both belong to the compact, so a multistate RN license can usually carry you across, though Graceland still wants board verification for each practicum state. On the Kansas side, your preceptor needs a Kansas APRN license matching your role.
Should I contact KU Health System preceptors directly?
Not at the 39th and Rainbow campus. The system's published process, in place since March 2026, asks students not to approach preceptors there one by one; the school, or the student at the school's direction, submits the request. Let Graceland's contract coordinator know the site has its own procedure.
Graceland's campus BSN students train at Kansas City hospitals. Is that the same for NP students?
No. Graceland assigns its on-campus BSN students to clinical sites at hospitals in the Greater Kansas City area. Graduate NP practicums work differently: you search with Graceland's help, and the contract coordinators or the course's lead faculty sign off on every preceptor and site.
When should a Kansas City preceptor search begin?
As much as a year ahead. Graceland warns that contracting can take a year or more, and the KU Health System's Fall window runs February 1 to April 30, well before Graceland's June 15 deadline. Starting early also leaves time to line up a second preceptor.
Does Kansas count Graceland's practicum hours for APRN licensure?
Graceland's June 2020 MSN chart says the MSN will lead to licensure in Kansas. When a graduate applies for a Kansas APRN license, the board looks for 750 or more clinical hours in the role and specialty if the student started after March 1, 2025, a figure Graceland's current tracks match.
