Missouri practicums for Graceland University nursing students
Missouri is home to Graceland University's School of Nursing and the base for every online graduate program, and Graceland's June 2020 licensure chart says its MSN leads to licensure here. A Missouri practicum passes through the same Graceland approvals as one anywhere else. What sets the state apart is the clinic: each Missouri nurse practitioner practices inside a signed collaborative arrangement with a physician partner, and its terms shape where and when a preceptor can teach you.

Missouri's row on Graceland's licensure chart
The answer is yes for the MSN. Graceland's charts carry a June 2020 date and no newer set has been posted, so read the Missouri row as Graceland's last published word rather than a fresh ruling. The row frames that yes as recognition: Missouri's Board of Nursing made a yearly report the condition for recognizing Iowa-approved education, and Graceland says its MSN keeps filing one with Missouri.
Other approvals point the same way. Graceland holds approval from the Missouri Department of Higher Education to operate here, and its baccalaureate nursing degrees hold full approval from both the Missouri and Iowa boards. The master's and doctoral degrees answer to the Iowa board, which is why the Missouri row talks about recognition.

No row names the BSN-to-DNP, which Graceland added in 2025-26, years after the charts were printed. Before you enroll or change states, ask the School of Nursing (use the contact on its web page) whether Missouri is an approved state for your track. The Independence campus, and who needs to visit
Graceland's School of Nursing is based at 1401 W. Truman Road in Independence, a commuter campus roughly a 20-minute trip from Kansas City, Missouri, which it shares with the university's seminary programs. The online programs are run from here. Its 55,000-square-foot facility includes a nursing skills lab whose cameras record demonstrations for playback, and the campus holds the Dr. Charles F. Grabske Library, a health services library whose nursing collection and article databases serve online students as well.
Most online students never need to make the drive. FNP and PMHNP focus sessions take place on Zoom. AGACNP is the exception: that track includes one focus session on this campus, a skills lab of two to three full days linked to NURS5195, and the campus offers no student housing, so book lodging early. Graceland's own sources name different weeks for it; the focus session page sets out both.
Two smaller Missouri touchpoints: the embroidered School of Nursing lab coat you wear to practicums is sold through the Independence campus bookstore, and the December commencement is held in Independence (December 12, 2026 on the current calendar), while the spring ceremony goes to Lamoni, Iowa.
Collaborative practice: what it changes in your search
The AANP classes Missouri as a restricted-practice state. Missouri NPs who prescribe or treat keep a signed collaborative practice arrangement with a physician throughout their careers, on terms set by RSMo 334.104 and the joint rule 20 CSR 2200-4.200. Students appear in neither text, yet both shape the clinic that hosts you.
Questions to put to a Missouri clinic before Appendix A
- How long has this NP worked with the physician? A new pairing starts with at least a month in which the physician is continuously present, so a freshly paired NP may only be able to host you on days the physician is in.
- Which offices does the NP cover? Each arrangement has to address geographic proximity, and an NP may split the week across locations. Graceland treats every address as its own site, with its own Appendix A and agreement.
- When is the physician on site? Where the NP diagnoses and starts treatment, the physician has to be on site no less than every two weeks. Those days suit a first meeting with a possible second preceptor.
- How are notes reviewed? The physician reviews at least 10 percent of the NP's charts every 14 days, and 20 percent where controlled substances are prescribed, so notes you draft and your preceptor signs can end up in that review.
A physician's collaborative roster is capped at six full-time equivalents across NPs, PAs and assistant physicians. The Missouri collaborative practice guide covers each rule in full, including the mileage figure missing from the current rule text, and Graceland's own preceptor requirements sit on top of Missouri law.
Missouri's preceptor tax credit, RSMo 135.690, is aimed at physicians and physician assistants teaching medical or PA students in primary care. It leaves out nurse practitioners and nursing students entirely, so it has no bearing on a Graceland practicum.
Kansas City, St. Louis, Springfield and Columbia
Most Graceland students in Missouri live near one of four metros. Kansas City is the closest to the Independence campus, with about 1.33 million people on the Missouri side of a 2.27-million metro. St. Louis is the largest, home to just over 2.1 million Missourians in a metro that spills into Illinois, and Springfield and Columbia round out the list.
Kansas City's systems differ in what they publish for visiting NP students. Each item below is that system's own policy for students of any school, not an arrangement with Graceland:
- Children's Mercy Kansas City posts a nursing clinical placement page listing its affiliation standards for nursing schools and its requirements for students and observers; step-by-step request instructions for NP students were not found.
- The University of Kansas Health System, across the state line, runs a centralized request process with fixed application windows, laid out on the Kansas City preceptor page.
- Saint Luke's Health System and University Health each have a student placement page whose current terms could not be verified, so read those pages directly.
- HCA Midwest Health, North Kansas City Hospital and AdventHealth Shawnee Mission had no NP-student placement page on their official sites, so the conversation starts with the practice itself.
You may also hear of MOKAN, described in one search listing as a Kansas City clinical education partnership; it could not be confirmed on the health system page that was checked, and the FAQ below explains where Graceland uses the name.
Elsewhere in the state, Mercy, BJC HealthCare, CoxHealth, MU Health Care and SSM Health are among the largest systems. They are examples of where NP students look, and each sets its own student process. If a site wants Graceland to use its request software or portal, let the contract coordinators know through soncontracts@graceland.edu before you apply.
Your license, background check and telehealth in Missouri
Missouri wrote the Nurse Licensure Compact into statute effective July 20, 2017 (RSMo 335.360 and following), and its multistate licenses went live on January 19, 2018. A Missouri multistate RN license reaches practicum sites in Kansas, Iowa, Nebraska and Oklahoma, all compact states. St. Louis-area clinics in Illinois are another matter, since Illinois never joined the compact; the Illinois guide explains the separate license.
Graceland's rule is the same on either side of a state line: an unencumbered RN license for your home state plus every approved state that hosts your hours, backed by a verification the board itself issues. No Missouri board rule has turned up that asks a program based in another state to give notice before placing students, and Graceland is approved to operate in Missouri regardless.

Does Graceland's MSN lead to NP licensure in Missouri?
Yes, on Graceland's newest published chart, which dates from June 2020, with a note that the program files a yearly report with Missouri's Board of Nursing. One row covers every NP track along with the RN-to-MSN and the certificates. Confirm with the School of Nursing that Missouri is an approved state for your track before you enroll.
Do Missouri students have to attend anything in Independence?
Only AGACNP students must. Their track includes one focus session on the Independence campus, two to three full days of skills lab tied to NURS5195, and the campus has no student housing. FNP and PMHNP students attend their focus sessions over Zoom and can finish without a campus visit, though the December commencement takes place in Independence.
Can a Missouri NP who just joined a practice precept me?

Is MOKAN how Graceland places NP students in Kansas City?
No. Graceland's graduate practicums move through its own forms (Appendix A and Appendix B), a site affiliation agreement and the contract coordinators. MOKAN appears in Graceland's on-campus BSN handbook as a coordinator role for undergraduate clinicals, and a search listing links a MOKAN partnership to Kansas City hospital campuses, but that link could not be confirmed on the health system's own page.
Can my practicum be at a St. Louis-area clinic on the Illinois side?
Only with an Illinois RN license. Illinois never joined the Nurse Licensure Compact, which means your Missouri multistate license stops at the river, and Graceland requires a board-verified, unencumbered license in every approved state where your hours happen. Ask the School of Nursing to confirm that Illinois is approved for your track before you commit to the site.
