Iowa's Board of Nursing approves Graceland University's MSN, post-graduate certificates and DNP, so Iowa rules stand behind parts of your handbook wherever you happen to live. If you also train in Iowa, you will work among nurse practitioners who may practice on their own authority, under a preceptorship rule that hands the search to the program and the student together.

Iowa on Graceland's chart, and why Iowa is different
Iowa gets a yes, with a one-line condition attached: the program must file an annual report to keep its state approval. That duty belongs to Graceland, not to you. The chart that says so is dated June 2020 and has not been reissued, so treat it as Graceland's last published position and confirm your own status with the School of Nursing.
Iowa is also the yardstick for everyone else. The rows Graceland marks unknown explain that the MSN was built with Iowa licensure in mind, and the catalog confirms that Graceland's master's and doctoral nursing degrees hold full approval from the Iowa board. Graceland's registration with the Iowa College Student Aid Commission covers operating in the state, and Iowa approved its place in NC-SARA, the distance-education reciprocity agreement Graceland joined in February 2016 and renews every February.

Iowa's approved-program list names Graceland's BSN, RN-BSN, MSN, post-graduate certificate and DNP, plus a note about interim RN-BSN approval and a fall 2026 launch that the list does not explain; RN-BSN students can ask Program Advising what it means. Iowa rules that travel with every Graceland student
Because Iowa approves the program, a few Iowa rules reach you even if you live in Texas or Oregon. Graceland's handbook cites the Iowa board for a duty to report any potential criminal charge that could keep a student out of the clinical part of a course. That is why each Appendix A you submit carries a box where you attest to no new charges; the background check page shows where it fits.
Iowa's education chapter also closes clinical and practicum courses to anyone the board has denied a license, or whose license stands suspended, surrendered or revoked in any U.S. jurisdiction. Graceland's handbook cites the same Iowa section for its background-check condition.
Rule numbers are where students get tripped up. In June 2025 Iowa shifted its nursing rules from 655 IAC to 481 IAC, so education programs now sit in chapter 616, practice in chapter 620 and ARNPs in chapter 621. Graceland's School of Nursing page still points readers to 655, and the handbook still calls the clinical-course bar section 2.5(5) of chapter 2; today it is 481 IAC 616.10(6). Look up the 481 number when you want the current wording.
Lamoni, Independence and where Iowa fits
Graceland's main residential campus covers 170 acres within walking distance of small-town Lamoni, a little more than an hour's drive south of Des Moines. Its newest nursing offering is a four-year residential BSN that opened in fall 2025, built around ready access to rural health facilities, and the campus library is the Frederick Madison Smith Library.
Graduate nursing is not taught in Lamoni. The School of Nursing and every online program run from the Independence campus in Missouri, and your practicum paperwork goes to soncontracts@graceland.edu, the contract coordinators' mailbox, whatever state you live in. Lamoni does host the spring commencement, set for April 25, 2027 on the current calendar, while the December ceremony is held in Independence.
For an Iowa resident the split is mostly on paper: Iowa approves your degree, Missouri houses your school, and your practicum happens wherever Graceland approves your site. Students close to a state line can weigh clinics on both sides; the Missouri guide covers how clinics there are organized.
Precepting in Iowa under 481 IAC 616.16
Iowa gives nurse practitioners full practice authority. Its board says ARNPs may practice independently and treats a collaborative agreement with a physician as optional, so clinics owned and staffed by ARNPs are realistic practicum sites.
The preceptorship rule for Iowa-approved ARNP programs took effect June 4, 2025, and it reads much like Graceland's own handbook. Its main points:
- Program and student share the job of finding a suitable preceptor.
- The bulk of your preceptorship time is spent with an ARNP or physician trained for the same role and population focus you are preparing for.
- Written preceptorship agreements get a fresh review from the program each year.
- The preceptor is on the facility's staff or under a current written agreement with it, and is licensed as an ARNP or physician where they practice.
Graceland's track rules already steer most hours toward clinicians in your population. If one practicum leans heavily on a specialist, ask your track coordinator how it counts toward Iowa's majority test. Iowa also credits the preceptor: guiding a student through an organized preceptorship for 60 hours or more counts as 6 contact hours toward the nurse's license renewal, with the school's documentation.

Des Moines and Iowa's other metros
About 759,000 people live in the Des Moines-West Des Moines metro, the state's largest, followed by Cedar Rapids, the Iowa side of the Davenport-Moline-Rock Island area and Iowa City. MercyOne, University of Iowa Health Care and UnityPoint Health are the big systems statewide. They illustrate where NP students tend to search, never places set aside for Graceland students.
The Des Moines systems publish three different starting points, each its own policy for students from any school:
- A committee or review cycle. UnityPoint Health - Des Moines hospitals take NP applications for acute care rotations, mental health included, with deadlines months before the term; Blank Children's Hospital reviews NP applications four times a year, in January, April, July and October.
- The school's agreement first. UnityPoint Clinic considers a student only once the school has an active affiliation agreement on file, and handles compliance in MyClinicalExchange; Broadlawns Medical Center also requires a school agreement, moved placements to myClinicalExchange from Spring 2026 and wants at least 30 days' notice.
- Straight to the office. MercyOne Des Moines welcomes rotations with its clinicians but leaves it to students to approach individual offices, and it needs paperwork 45 days before the start.
A system with its own portal or request steps is one to raise with the contract coordinator early. At the edges of the state, Quad Cities clinics in Illinois call for an Illinois license, while Iowa's share of the Omaha metro connects to the Nebraska guide.
Licensing for Iowa practicums
Iowa has been a compact state since January 19, 2018. Its board requires any post-licensure student working in an Iowa clinical setting to hold an Iowa license or a multistate license, either one active, and Iowa Code 152.1 exempts unlicensed students only, never nurses already licensed as RNs, LPNs or ARNPs. PMHNP students should note Iowa's telehealth line: when the patient is physically in Iowa, the nurse needs an Iowa or multistate license. Iowa has not enacted the APRN Compact, so your future ARNP license is still issued state by state.
One address trap: the Iowa Board of Nursing is now part of Iowa's Department of Inspections, Appeals, and Licensing (DIAL) in Des Moines, yet Graceland's handbook still prints the board's older River Point Business Park address. Use the DIAL website for current contact details.

Questions Graceland students ask
Is Graceland treated as an Iowa program or an out-of-state one?
As an Iowa program. Iowa's board is the one that approves Graceland's MSN, certificates and DNP, so its criteria for programs based in other states do not describe Graceland. The license rules still apply to you: Iowa expects licensed students in its clinical settings to hold an active Iowa or multistate license, and Graceland wants board verification of it.
What does 'annual report is required to maintain state approval' mean for me?
Nothing you need to file. That sentence is the Iowa row on Graceland's June 2020 MSN chart, and it describes the program's obligation to report to the Iowa board each year to keep its approval. Your own Iowa tasks are the license verification, the Castle Branch items and an Appendix A for each practicum site.
Do Graceland graduate nursing students go to the Lamoni campus?
Not for coursework. The graduate programs are online and run from the Independence, Missouri campus, and Lamoni plays no part in the practicum or focus session schedule. Lamoni is Graceland's residential campus, home to the new four-year BSN, and it hosts the spring commencement ceremony each April.
Can I train at a Quad Cities clinic on the Illinois side?
You would need an Illinois RN license, and Graceland would need to approve Illinois for your track. The Davenport-Moline-Rock Island metro crosses into Illinois, a state that never joined the Nurse Licensure Compact, so an Iowa multistate license stops at the state line. Graceland requires board verification of an unencumbered license in each state where your hours happen.
Which Des Moines systems want an agreement with Graceland before I apply?
UnityPoint Clinic and Broadlawns Medical Center both publish that the school needs an affiliation agreement with them, and both run student onboarding through myClinicalExchange, Broadlawns from Spring 2026. Raise either one with Graceland's contract coordinator early so the agreement can be requested. MercyOne Des Moines, by contrast, expects students to contact its offices directly.
