Finding nurse practitioner preceptors in Iowa
Iowa lets advanced registered nurse practitioners practice independently, so an ARNP preceptor there needs no collaborating physician. Iowa's rule for ARNP programs, 481 IAC 616.16, says the program and the student find the preceptor, the same shared model Graceland University uses, and the Des Moines systems each publish their own student process with its own calendar.

Independent ARNPs widen the field
The Iowa Board of Nursing states that ARNPs may practice independently in Iowa. An ARNP may keep a collaborative agreement with a physician if warranted, but the board does not require one, and Iowa's rules let an ARNP practice to the full extent of license, education and experience within the population focus (481-621.4(4)).
That puts ARNP-owned clinics and practices run entirely by nurse practitioners on the list of possible practicum sites. In Missouri, by contrast, every NP who prescribes or treats works under a written arrangement with a physician. Graceland's own standards sit on top: nurse practitioner preceptors bring an MSN or higher plus at least one year in practice, physician preceptors must be board-certified or board-eligible, and physician assistants cannot precept. Iowa also rewards the effort. Its continuing education chapter lets a nurse who spends 60 or more hours guiding a student through an organized preceptorship claim 6 contact hours at renewal, backed by a record from the institution overseeing the student.
What 481 IAC 616.16 asks of an ARNP preceptorship
Iowa's preceptorship rule for ARNP programs took effect June 4, 2025. It speaks to programs the Iowa board approves, and Graceland's MSN, post-graduate certificates and DNP are on that list. Its core points:
- Finding the preceptor is shared. In the rule's words, "The nursing education program and student will find an appropriate preceptor."
- Match the role and population. Most of your preceptorship time belongs with an ARNP or physician whose role and population focus match the ones you are training for.
- Annual review. Written preceptorship agreements get a yearly review by the program.
- Tie to the facility. The preceptor is employed by the clinical facility or holds a current written agreement with it.
- Licensed where they work. The preceptor holds a current ARNP or physician license issued by the state in which they work.
Graceland's own rules line up with it. The handbook describes practicums arranged by the student with Graceland's assistance, a new Appendix B from each preceptor every term, and an affiliation agreement with each site. The PMHNP track goes further than Iowa's majority test, requiring a psychiatrist or certified PMHNP for all three practicums. Licenses for you and your preceptor in Iowa
Iowa's Nurse Licensure Compact membership began January 19, 2018. The board says a post-licensure student in any Iowa clinical needs an Iowa license or a multistate license that is active, and Iowa's student exemption in Code 152.1 does not cover anyone already licensed as a nurse.
Telehealth follows the patient. If the patient is physically in Iowa during the visit, the nurse must be licensed in Iowa or hold a multistate license, which matters for PMHNP students, whose telehealth allowance tops out at two terms or 450 hours.
Watch the rule numbers. In June 2025 Iowa renumbered its nursing rules, shifting them out of 655 IAC and into 481 IAC: education programs went to chapter 616, nursing practice to 620 and ARNPs to 621. Graceland's pages still cite 655, and the handbook's "2.5(5)" bar on clinical courses for students whose license was denied or suspended now lives at 481-616.10(6).
Des Moines systems and their own processes
Treat these as examples of places NP students try, each described as the system publishes it for students of any school. None is an arrangement with Graceland, and any of them can change.

UnityPoint's Fall deadline of February 1 lands more than four months before Graceland's June 15 paperwork date, so plan backward from the system's calendar, not Graceland's. If a system uses its own portal or request steps, tell the contract coordinator first; see sites with their own request systems.
A pediatric hospital setting does not fit NURS6740, which Graceland limits to primary care with no specialty hours. Pediatric specialty time belongs in NURS6830, up to 150 hours.
Lamoni, Des Moines and the rest of Iowa
Graceland's main residential campus sits in Lamoni, just over an hour south of Des Moines, while the School of Nursing and the online programs run from Independence, Missouri. Does my Iowa NP preceptor need a collaborating physician?
No. The Iowa Board of Nursing says ARNPs may practice independently and does not require a collaborative agreement, though an ARNP may choose one. Graceland's own preceptor checklist, experience minimum included, still applies on top of Iowa law.
Who finds my preceptor under Iowa's rule?

Will MercyOne Des Moines set up a rotation for me?
MercyOne Des Moines says it encourages rotations with its physicians, physician assistants and nurse practitioners but does not arrange or schedule them; students contact the offices directly. It needs your documentation at least 45 days before the rotation. Remember that Graceland never approves physician assistants as preceptors.
Does precepting count toward an Iowa nurse's license renewal?
Yes. Iowa's CE chapter turns 60 or more hours of guiding a student in an organized preceptorship into 6 renewal contact hours, provided the institution overseeing the student documents it. Bring that up when you ask an Iowa nurse practitioner to take you on.
