A Graceland University practicum inside your own employer
Graceland University allows it, within firm limits. A student employed by a large health system can complete practicum hours in a separate clinical area, never on their own unit and never under anyone in their reporting line. The site still needs Appendix A, an affiliation agreement, an approved preceptor and an approval email, exactly as an outside clinic would.

What the handbook allows, in its own words
The permission sits inside the preceptor rules of the 2026 Graduate Student Handbook: "If the student is employed by a large healthcare system, the practicum experiences can be completed at a separate clinical area other than the unit where the student works." The same passage draws the boundaries. You may not train on the unit that employs you, may not be precepted by a supervisor, employee or subordinate, and may not have a direct professional or personal relationship with the preceptor.
The rule appears in the general section and again in the FNP, AGACNP and PMHNP sections, so it applies in every track, including the post-graduate certificates and the NP practicums of the BSN-to-DNP. The handbook leaves "large" and "separate" undefined. Those judgments belong to the contract coordinators and the course lead faculty, which is why the strongest workplace plans reach them early.
What a separate clinical area can look like
With "separate" undefined, think in terms of different teams, locations and patient populations. A few patterns fit the rule's wording, each subject to Graceland's review:
- FNP: a hospital nurse training in the same system's outpatient family practice or internal medicine clinics, which also satisfies the primary-care-only rule for
NURS6740andNURS6760 - AGACNP: a step-down or emergency nurse training in the system's ICU for
NURS5460, or with its hospitalist service forNURS5450 - PMHNP: an inpatient psychiatric nurse training in the system's outpatient psychiatry practice with a psychiatrist or certified PMHNP
Watch NURS5470 closely. Graceland encourages AGACNP students to spend most or all of the final practicum in a specialty outside their current area of practice. An emergency nurse finishing with emergency department clinicians runs against that advice, and doing it in their own department breaks the unit rule outright.
Whatever the pattern, the preceptor still has to meet every qualification on who cannot precept you and the preceptor requirements for your course.
What the contract coordinators check
Being on the payroll does not shortcut Graceland's paperwork. You file Appendix A for the site and its exact address, and the contract coordinators confirm whether Graceland has an affiliation agreement with that location or start one. An agreement with one clinic in a network may not reach every clinic or address in it, so a system that already hosts Graceland students at one hospital can still need paperwork for the clinic you have in mind.
They also look at who is precepting you and where. Expect questions about your own unit and title, the proposed area, and whether the preceptor has any line to you at work. Answer those in your first email to soncontracts@graceland.edu to save a round of back-and-forth. The preceptor completes Appendix B each term, and nothing counts until your approval email arrives and the site and preceptor appear in Typhon.
Your employer's own student process
Many large systems route student placements through a central office or software, sometimes even for their own staff. Graceland's handbook asks you to tell the contract coordinator whenever a potential site requires Graceland to use software or a website, or runs its own process for requesting a student placement. Sites with their own request systems covers that route.
Timelines differ by system. The University of Kansas Health System, for example, moved its main campus to centralized preceptor pairing in March 2026, asks students there not to contact individual preceptors, and takes Fall applications from February 1 to April 30, according to its own student placement page. Check whether rules like that cover employees before you approach a colleague in another department, and ask the system's education or student placement office how your case is handled.
Keeping practicum time apart from your job
A practicum day at your employer is a student day. Graceland counts hours only with your approved preceptor, at the approved site, inside the term's dates and after the approval email. An ordinary shift on your own unit fails the first two tests however much you learn on it.
Graceland provides liability insurance only during scheduled practicum experiences, another reason to book practicum days as their own blocks rather than stretching a work shift into practicum time. On those days wear the Graceland photo badge and the white lab coat with the School of Nursing logo, so patients and staff see a student rather than the nurse they know from another floor. Plan the calendar, too. Practicums call for 16 to 24 hours a week in the clinical setting, with faculty asking that hours be finished by week 14, so settle a work schedule with your manager that keeps those days open for the whole trimester.
How students make it work, step by step

RN-BSN students have more room
The online RN-BSN runs under its own handbook with a looser rule. Its practice experiences may be completed at your place of employment "if that organization will assist the student in meeting the objectives of the course." You follow the facility's own requirements, such as HIPAA paperwork and identification, and if the site asks for a Graceland ID, the RN-BSN handbook points you to soncontracts@graceland.edu.
Graceland publishes no RN-BSN practice hour totals and does not say who arranges these experiences, so confirm the details with your course faculty. Questions Graceland students ask
Do I need a new affiliation agreement if Graceland already works with my employer?
Possibly. Graceland needs an agreement for each site where hands-on care happens, and an agreement with one clinic does not necessarily cover every clinic or address in the same network. File Appendix A for the exact location; the contract coordinators confirm whether an agreement is already on file or start a new one.
Can my manager arrange the practicum for me?
Your manager can open doors, introduce you to another department and approve a schedule that frees your practicum days. Your manager cannot precept you, and neither can anyone else in your reporting line. The preceptor must be a qualified NP or physician in a separate clinical area with no direct working relationship to you.
Can I count hours from my regular job toward a Graceland practicum?
Only hours with your approved preceptor, at the approved site, inside the term and after your approval email count. An ordinary shift on your own unit fails those tests. Booking practicum days as separate blocks also keeps you inside Graceland's liability coverage, which applies only during scheduled practicum experiences.
Is another office of a small employer a separate clinical area?
The handbook's permission speaks of large healthcare systems and defines neither size nor separation. A small practice that shares staff across offices may leave you working beside your own coworkers or supervisor. Describe the setup to the contract coordinators and the course lead faculty before you ask anyone to file Appendix B.
Can I finish NURS5470 in my own emergency department?
No. Your own unit is off limits in every practicum, and for the final AGACNP practicum Graceland also encourages most or all hours in a specialty outside your current area of practice. An emergency nurse is better placed with an intensivist, and an ICU nurse with emergency department clinicians, in a separate area of the system or elsewhere.
