Preceptor evaluations and site visits in Graceland practicums
In every Graceland University practicum your preceptor validates your time logs, completes a midterm and a final evaluation of you in Typhon, and may host a random midterm site visit arranged with your instructor. Sending the evaluation requests is your job, and an evaluation that is not done on time can stop you from progressing in the course.

Three checks in every practicum
Graceland's handbook builds three checks into each practicum course. They run alongside your hours, and your preceptor is part of all three:
- Time-log validationYour preceptor validates your clinical time logs at regular intervals. You turn the logs in to the Assignment Folder in your Canvas course.
- Midterm and final evaluationsEach preceptor completes a midterm and a final performance evaluation of you in Typhon once you send the request.
- Random midterm site visitsYour instructor and preceptor arrange a midterm visit when your practicum is one of those selected at random.
The grade stays with the faculty. The handbook says "The assigned GU faculty is responsible for student grades", and School of Nursing faculty remain in contact with your primary preceptor throughout the practicum. The preceptor's view feeds that grade; the instructor decides it.
Midterm and final evaluations
Evaluations are completed in Typhon, the database Graceland currently uses for case logs and evaluations. Your preceptor's Typhon access is set up from the unique email address on their Appendix B, and Graceland's preceptor handout asks them to complete evaluations in the school's online database when the student sends the request. The handbook puts it plainly: facilitating completion at the required intervals is the student's responsibility.
If you have two preceptors in a practicum, which Graceland allows, each of them completes a midterm and a final. Appendix B tells preceptors to expect one to two evaluations during the term, while the handbook's evaluation section describes a midterm and a final for each preceptor; the evaluation dates for your course are in its syllabus, which Graceland posts on the myGraceland SON Resources page. Where the two descriptions differ for your situation, follow the syllabus and ask your instructor. The Typhon page covers how the preceptor's access is set up.
Time logs your preceptor validates
Time logs are the running record of your hours, and Graceland expects every preceptor to validate them at regular intervals. They go to the Assignment Folder in the online course platform, which is Canvas, rather than to Typhon.
What goes in the log is narrower than time on site. Only direct patient contact counts toward Graceland practicum hours, the first 8 hours of each practicum are mostly observation, and hours count only inside the term's dates at an approved site with an approved preceptor. The practicum hours page sets out the full definition.
Make validation routine. Agree a rhythm with your preceptor at orientation, such as a short review at the end of each clinic week, so confirmations never pile up at midterm. Five minutes on a Friday is a far smaller favor to ask than a review of eight weeks at once.
Random midterm site visits
Graceland arranges random midterm site visits between the preceptor and the instructor. Because the selection is random, you may have a visit in one practicum and none in the next. If your site is chosen, your instructor sets it up with your preceptor, and the handbook leaves the details to them, so ask your instructor what the visit will involve.
A visit goes most smoothly when everything on site matches what was approved. The clinician you work with should be the preceptor named in your approval email, at the address on your Appendix A. Graceland allows a single substitute preceptor at your primary site for up to 40 hours in a term without new paperwork; beyond that, the substitute needs an approved Appendix B as a second preceptor. The changing or adding a preceptor page explains the limits.
When an evaluation is late
Graceland treats a missing evaluation as a progress problem, not a clerical one. The handbook says that if preceptor evaluations are not completed at the required times, students will not be allowed to progress within the course and could be administratively blocked in the course.
The calendar leaves little slack for a late final. Faculty ask that all hours be finished by the end of week 14 of the 16-week trimester, which leaves about two weeks for the final evaluation and course wrap-up. Hours not finished inside the trimester can become an incomplete if the instructor approves, and an incomplete practicum delays the start of the next practicum course by a term. The incompletes page explains the knock-on effect on your completion plan.
Evaluations are yours to request. Send each Typhon request on time and follow it up; an unfinished evaluation can block your progress in the course.
Keeping evaluations on schedule
- At orientationTell your preceptor that Graceland asks for a midterm and a final evaluation in Typhon, and that the request will come from you to the email on their Appendix B. Hand over Graceland's one-page Preceptor Information and Responsibilities sheet if they have not seen it.
- Before midtermCheck the syllabus for the evaluation dates, send the Typhon request on time and make sure your time logs are validated.
- If a request stallsRemind the preceptor in person at your next shift. If it is still not done, tell your course instructor before the due date, not after it.
- Before week 14Plan the final evaluation for your last clinic days so it is in as soon as your hours are complete.
Why Graceland students choose us
The evaluation stage runs smoothly when the preceptor knows what Graceland will ask before the term begins. Every preceptor we arrange for a Graceland student hears about the Typhon evaluations, the time-log validation and the chance of a site visit at the outset, and we match you with clinicians ready to take that on.
If a preceptor steps away in the middle of a term, we stay on call and start looking for a replacement right away, with the second-preceptor paperwork in mind. You get a preceptor who treats Graceland's checks as part of the arrangement from day one. Tell us about your practicum through the contact page or the form below.
Questions Graceland students ask
What if my Graceland preceptor has not completed my evaluation?
Follow up promptly and tell your course instructor before the due date. Graceland's handbook says students whose preceptor evaluations are not completed at the required times will not be allowed to progress in the course and could be administratively blocked. Sending and chasing the Typhon request is the student's responsibility, so note when you sent it.
Who schedules Graceland's midterm site visits?
The handbook says random midterm site visits are arranged between the preceptor and the instructor. You do not book them yourself, and not every student has one in every practicum. If your site is selected, let your preceptor know to expect contact from your instructor, and make sure the site and preceptor match your approval email.
Does each preceptor evaluate me if I have two in one practicum?
Yes. Graceland's handbook says each preceptor completes a midterm and a final performance evaluation, and Graceland allows up to two preceptors per practicum. Each one needs an approved Appendix B for that term and receives the evaluation request from you through Typhon.
Where do Graceland time logs go?
To the Assignment Folder in your course on the online course platform, which is Canvas. Your preceptor validates the logs at regular intervals. Case logs and preceptor evaluations are separate and are kept in Typhon. Your course syllabus gives the submission schedule for your practicum.
When are Graceland midterm and final evaluations due?
The handbook calls for a midterm and a final evaluation but leaves the exact dates to each course, so check your course syllabus on the myGraceland SON Resources page. With faculty asking that hours be finished by the end of week 14 of the 16-week trimester, plan the final request for your last clinic days rather than the last week of term.
