Graceland NP students in Alaska: registering your preceptorship
Graceland University's most recent licensure chart, from June 2020, says the MSN leads to licensure in Alaska, a state that follows NONPF's criteria for NP programs. Alaska places its clinical step on the student rather than the school: anyone doing APRN clinicals for a program based elsewhere must register that preceptorship with Alaska's nursing board, and the registration runs on a 12-month clock.

With the chart unchanged since June 2020, and small slips like the DNP wording, confirm with the School of Nursing that Alaska is among the states it currently accepts NP students from. The licensure chart guide has the background.
How Alaska's APRN preceptorship registration works
Per the Board's FAQ, each APRN student of an outside program files a preceptorship application with the Board. Regulation 12 AAC 44.460 authorizes it: the Board may register a student of an APRN course of study run from outside Alaska to practice clinically within the state. You file it yourself on form 08-4253, the APRN Preceptorship Registration; it registers you, not Graceland's program. The application draws on three things:
- An RN license in good standingAlaska's or another state's, as far as the registration itself goes.
- Proof you are enrolledEvidence of current enrollment in Graceland's APRN track.
- The preceptorship agreementA copy of the arrangement among school, facility, student and preceptor, which the Board must approve.
A registration stays valid for 12 months at most, ending sooner if your preceptorship wraps up first, and you get one renewal. Graceland's own clock is similar, since a track's practicum courses must sit within a 12-month span, so map the registration and its single renewal onto your three-trimester sequence before you file.
Preceptors and the places Alaska students search
Alaska NPs practice with full authority. For the registration, Alaska wants a preceptor who is a physician or APRN in good legal standing (an active, unencumbered license or practice privilege), whose focus matches the kind of practice you are training for, and who is there to supervise, teach and assess your clinical work. Graceland's preceptor requirements add their own credential and experience rules. No Alaska preceptor incentive appears in state records.
Anchorage, with about 406,000 people, is the only large metro; Fairbanks-College has about 94,000 and Juneau far fewer. In Anchorage, students weigh Providence Alaska Medical Center (Providence operates more Alaska hospitals than anyone), HCA's Alaska Regional Hospital and the tribally run Alaska Native Medical Center. Palmer has Mat-Su Regional Medical Center, and Fairbanks has Foundation Health Partners, parent of Tanana Valley Clinic and Fairbanks Memorial Hospital. Each handles students its own way.
Licenses, telehealth and the Independence trip
Alaska has yet to join the compact, and the Board lists two bills to do so, HB 131 and SB 124, as still pending. Although the registration will take an RN license issued elsewhere, Graceland asks for an unencumbered license, verified by the board, in the approved state where your practicum sites are, so plan on an Alaska RN license for Alaska hours (RN license guide). The same Alaska license covers PMHNP telehealth visits with patients located in Alaska.
AGACNP students also plan one journey to Graceland's Independence, Missouri campus for the track's on-campus focus session, two to three full days with no campus housing, so reserve flights and a room early. FNP and PMHNP sessions happen on Zoom (focus sessions).

Does Graceland's FNP lead to licensure in Alaska?
The June 2020 chart says yes: the MSN, FNP included, meets Alaska's requirements, and Alaska measures NP programs against NONPF's criteria. Given the chart's 2020 date, check with the School of Nursing that Alaska is still on its approved list before enrolling, and review Alaska's APRN licensure steps with the Board as graduation nears.
When should I file my Alaska preceptorship registration?
Once your preceptor and site are settled, since the application includes a copy of the preceptorship agreement, and before any clinical hours in Alaska. Because registration expires after 12 months, filing far ahead can eat into time you need at the end. Line it up with Graceland's paperwork cycle on the deadlines page.
Do RN-BSN students in Alaska register too?
The Board's FAQ lists no registration step for them. For RN-to-BS distance students it names two conditions: the school must be nationally accredited and approved by its own state, and you need a current, unencumbered RN license issued by a U.S. state or territory. Graceland's baccalaureate nursing program carries CCNE accreditation; ask your course faculty about RN-BSN practice experiences in Alaska.
Does Alaska's pending compact bill change anything yet?
Not yet. Alaska's legislature has passed no joining bill, and HB 131 and SB 124, both introduced in the 2025-2026 session, remain pending. Until Alaska joins and puts the compact into effect, a multistate license from Missouri, Iowa or anywhere else leaves you short at an Alaska site.
