Massachusetts for Graceland nursing students
Graceland University's June 2020 licensure chart, the latest it has published, answers "Unknown" for the MSN in Massachusetts. Two state rules then shape any practicum here: the board's own approval process for schools based elsewhere, and a compact that is signed but not yet working, so an RN license from another state does not reach Massachusetts patients. In the row's own words, the MSN "is not approved by the Massachusetts board to lead to licensure in Massachusetts", which is why Graceland stops short of a yes or no and refers future Massachusetts NPs to the board. The row's closing sentence misspells the state as "Massachusets", a sign of its 2020 age.

The board's Part A and Part B approvals
Graceland, run from Lamoni, Iowa and Independence, Missouri, is the kind of school 244 CMR 6.03(2) speaks to: an institution headquartered outside Massachusetts must win the board's approval before holding clinical or classroom learning in the state. The process has three pieces:
- Part A, once a yearApproval of the parent institution, filed at least six months before any Massachusetts clinical placement.
- Part B, for each placementFiled no later than 30 days before that placement starts. Changes go in at least two weeks ahead, and the board hears about any change within 7 days.
- The approval letterNo student may begin until the board has issued it.
Every criterion on that page speaks of readying graduates for the NCLEX-RN or NCLEX-PN exam; nothing addresses a master's-level NP track such as Graceland's. Only the school can file, so ask the School of Nursing whether it treats Massachusetts sites as needing Part A and Part B, and pad your calendar if it does. The same rules cap supervision at two students per preceptor.
Practice rules and where students look
AANP files Massachusetts under full practice, but only after a two-year runway: a new NP first practices under supervision from a qualified APRN or physician, and those with equivalent experience may be exempted. An NP beyond that runway, or a board-certified or board-eligible physician, can meet Graceland's preceptor requirements.
Greater Boston dominates, with roughly 4.6 million Massachusetts residents in its metro; Worcester and Springfield are the other in-state metros, and about 594,000 people belong to the Providence-Warwick metro that crosses from Rhode Island. Among large systems are Baystate Health and UMass Memorial Health, along with Mass General Brigham, Boston Medical Center Health System and Beth Israel Lahey Health. They are orientation points, not known Graceland sites. No state preceptor incentive is recorded.
Why a multistate license falls short here for now
The compact became Massachusetts law in late 2024, yet the board treats it as dormant until the rollout is done; its target is May 2027, and a conditional FBI sign-off on background checks arrived in May 2026. Meanwhile, a multistate license from Missouri, Iowa or any other compact state gives you no right to practice on Massachusetts patients. Graceland wants an unencumbered license in the approved state where your practicum sits, so a Massachusetts site means a Massachusetts RN license through the current application process, with its verification in Castle Branch.

Questions Graceland students ask
Does a multistate compact license cover Graceland practicum hours in Massachusetts?
Only once Massachusetts finishes implementing the compact, which the board is aiming to do in May 2027. Before then, your home state's multistate license stops at the Massachusetts line, so budget time for a Massachusetts RN application before committing to any site here.
Do the Part A and Part B approvals apply to Graceland's MSN?
The rules are framed around programs that prepare students for NCLEX, and the board's page does not address graduate NP programs. Only the school can answer and file. Ask the School of Nursing early; if it does file, Part B has to be in at least 30 days before each placement starts.
Can I live in Massachusetts and study in Graceland's online FNP program?
The June 2020 chart gives no clear answer, since the MSN row reads Unknown. Admission depends on whether Graceland holds approval to offer practicum experiences in your state, so ask the School of Nursing directly before applying, and ask the Board of Registration in Nursing how it would view the degree for NP licensure.
Could I do practicum hours in Rhode Island or Connecticut instead?
Both show Yes on Graceland's June 2020 chart and both are compact states, but a site there still needs Graceland's approval, an affiliation agreement and a license valid in that state. Ask the School of Nursing before you commit, and read the Rhode Island and Connecticut guides.
