Precepting a Graceland University nurse practitioner student
Thank you for considering it. Graceland University asks a preceptor for a current, unencumbered license where they practice, the credentials its handbook lists, a short online Appendix B each term, and midterm and final evaluations in Typhon. The rest is what you already do well: caring for patients and explaining your thinking, with an experienced RN from your own community at your side.

Who Graceland welcomes as a preceptor
Graceland's online NP students are practicing RNs who complete their practicums in their home communities, so its preceptors are the nurse practitioners and physicians already caring for patients there. An NP preceptor holds at least an MSN from an NLNAC- or CCNE-accredited program and has at least a year of experience; an NP certified by ANCC or AANP without a master's may be considered with one to three years of full-time practice. A physician preceptor holds an MD or DO and is board-certified or board-eligible. Physician assistants are not approved for practicum hours.
Each track looks for particular practices:
- Family NP students need primary care: pediatric offices, family practices and internal medicine clinics, with some specialty time allowed in the final practicum
- Adult-gerontology acute care NP students need hospitalists, internists, pulmonologists, ICU clinicians, intensivists and emergency department practitioners
- Psychiatric mental health NP students need psychiatrists and certified PMHNPs, including practices that see children and older adults

Appendix B, once each term
Your formal step is Appendix B, Graceland's Preceptor Application & Agreement. It is an online form on my.graceland.edu, with separate links for FNP, AGACNP and PMHNP students, and Graceland notes that you should not need to log in to complete it. Because it approves you for a specific student and practicum, a new one is filed each term you precept, even for a student you have taught before.
Have these ready: the student's name, Graceland student ID, @sting.graceland.edu email address, course name and term, along with your own license, credentials and experience. The form also asks for a unique email address, which Graceland uses to set up your Typhon login. A printed copy goes to soncontracts@graceland.edu, the School of Nursing's mailbox for everything about practicums. Appendix B walks through the form.
Your site's part: the affiliation agreement
Graceland needs a signed affiliation agreement on file for every site where a student gives hands-on care, before any clinical activity begins. The student starts the process by filing Appendix A with your site's name, address and contract contact, and a Graceland contract coordinator sends the agreement to the person your organization designates. If you work from more than one office, each address the student will use needs its own request and agreement.
If your organization runs its own process or software for student requests, let the student know early. Graceland asks students to tell the contract coordinator in that case, so the request travels through your system's channel. The coordinator deals with your organization directly, so your part is mostly pointing the student to the right person. Affiliation agreements explains how the agreement works.
What a term with a Graceland student looks like
For students who began in August 2023 or later, the first two practicums in each track are 225 hours and the final one is 300; students who started earlier may be on shorter totals and will tell you theirs. Students spend 16 to 24 hours a week in your clinic or hospital across a 16-week trimester, and faculty ask that hours be finished by week 14. The first 8 hours of each practicum are mostly observation. From the second day, the student works as a beginning provider under your supervision, typically seeing one to two patients an hour.
The student arrives with a Graceland photo badge and a white lab coat bearing the School of Nursing logo, and Graceland provides professional liability insurance for the student during practicum hours. The handbook reminds students that they are guests at your site and asks them to respect your time and your practice. It also tells them to obtain your signature on all patient documentation, including office charting and prescriptions.
Hours count only once Graceland emails the student an approval naming you and your site.
The one-page responsibilities handout
Graceland gives students a one-page sheet, Preceptor Information and Responsibilities, to hand to a prospective preceptor. It is the closest thing to a job description, and it is brief. In summary, it asks you to:
- Orient the student to your site and its routines
- Role-model advanced practice and give regular feedback
- Review the student's differential diagnoses and treatment plans
- Complete evaluations in Graceland's online system when the student sends the request
- Collaborate and communicate with Graceland faculty
Ask the student for the sheet if you have not seen it; it is written for you and answers most first questions. Graceland also posts course syllabi for enrolled students on myGraceland, so your student can show you the course objectives. Evaluations, time logs and the midterm visit
The paperwork during the term is light and predictable. You validate the student's clinical time logs at regular intervals and complete a midterm and a final performance evaluation in Typhon when the student sends the request; Graceland describes it as one to two evaluations a term. Faculty stay in contact with the primary preceptor through the practicum, and random midterm site visits are arranged between you and the instructor.
Timing is the part that matters most. If evaluations are not completed when due, the student cannot progress in the course and may be administratively blocked, so a short session in Typhon at midterm and at the end keeps your student moving. Grades stay with Graceland's faculty, and your evaluation informs them. See Typhon for how the system works.

Questions Graceland students ask
Do I need a Graceland login to complete Appendix B?
No. Appendix B is an online form on my.graceland.edu, and Graceland notes you should not need to log in. You will need the student's name, student ID, Sting email, course and term, plus a unique email address of your own, which becomes your Typhon login for evaluations.
Can I precept the same Graceland student for more than one term?
Yes, for up to two of the student's three practicum terms, as long as your practice fits each course. Graceland requires every NP student to work with at least two different preceptors across the three practicums, so another clinician covers the remaining term. You complete a new Appendix B for each term you precept.
Does Graceland provide liability insurance for the student?
Yes. Graceland provides professional liability insurance for its students during their scheduled practicum hours. Questions about coverage for your organization, or about contract terms, go to Graceland's contract coordinators at soncontracts@graceland.edu, who send and manage the affiliation agreement with your site.
Can I precept a Graceland student by telehealth?
It depends on the track. PMHNP students may complete up to two terms or 450 hours through telehealth, and you and the student must each be licensed where every patient is during the visit. FNP students need the instructor's approval for any telehealth hours, and AGACNP students may not do telehealth at all.
How much of my week does precepting take?
Students spend 16 to 24 hours a week in the clinical setting across a 16-week trimester, aiming to finish by week 14. Graceland's own planning examples use two or three eight-hour days a week. You can agree on the days that suit your clinic before the student files Appendix A.
