Graceland University practicums in Vermont
Vermont sits in the "Unknown" column of Graceland University's June 2020 licensure chart, still the newest the university has posted. The row says Vermont's board had not approved the MSN, not that the degree fails Vermont's standard, so get the School of Nursing's current answer before enrolling or moving.

The row is plain about its logic. Graceland built the MSN for Iowa licensure, notes that it is "not approved by the Vermont board to lead to licensure in Vermont", and on that basis declines to judge the degree against Vermont's educational requirements, sending anyone who means to work in Vermont to the board before enrolling.
Whether Graceland takes students from Vermont is a separate question for the School of Nursing, which accepts students from states where it is approved to offer practicum experiences and asks applicants to check. Use the contact on its page.
Vermont's preceptor rule lines up with Graceland's
If you have read Graceland's preceptor rules, the Vermont board's FAQ will feel like an echo. An APRN or a physician may precept you. That clinician must be Vermont-licensed with nothing restricting the license, must have practiced in your role and with your patient population, and must stay in direct contact with your Graceland faculty. PAs are shut out, as in Graceland's handbook. So FNP students hunt for someone seasoned in family practice, PMHNP students for a psychiatrist or psychiatric NP; Graceland's side sits on the preceptor requirements page.
AANP rates Vermont full practice with a carve-out for newcomers: until an NP has two years and 2,400 practice hours behind them, they must sign on with a Vermont-licensed physician or APRN as a collaborator. Beyond that, NPs practice independently.
Out-of-state programs under Vermont's rules
Vermont's current nursing rules, effective May 11, 2023, let a nursing education program operate in the state only with board approval, though programs taught entirely online get a pass if Vermont's Agency of Education has approved them (the statute is 26 V.S.A. 1584). Graceland's exact situation, a school elsewhere whose student trains at a Vermont clinic, turns up nowhere in the rules, board FAQ or statutes that were checked.
Graceland's own chart creates a second wrinkle. Section 1583(2) of Title 26 lets students work without a Vermont license when the work belongs to coursework in a program the Vermont board has approved, and the chart says Vermont's board has not approved Graceland's MSN. The handbook already requires an RN license that is good in your practicum state, so plan on having one.
Searching a small state, and the license you hold
Burlington-South Burlington, at about 228,000 people, is Vermont's only metro; Rutland is a micropolitan area, and part of Lebanon-Claremont reaches over from New Hampshire. University of Vermont Health's hospitals include Porter Medical Center, Central Vermont Medical Center and UVM Medical Center. Outside that group, look at Rutland Regional Medical Center and, in the southwest, Southwestern Vermont Medical Center, which Dartmouth Health of New Hampshire counts as a member. Each keeps its own student process; none is offered here as a Graceland site.
In fiscal 2023 Vermont ran a one-time grant for nurses at its critical access hospitals, limited to those teaching students from Vermont nursing programs. A Graceland student fell outside it, and nothing suggests it outlived that year.
Since February 1, 2022, Vermont has honored multistate licenses. Its Rule 4.1 lets you keep using the one your compact home state issued, Missouri or Iowa for example, until Vermont becomes your primary residence; then Vermont's own license is required. Is Graceland's online MSN approved in Vermont?
No Vermont approval is recorded. Graceland's June 2020 chart marks the MSN Unknown because Vermont's board has not approved it for Vermont licensure. That is a licensure answer, not an admission one. Ask the Vermont Board of Nursing how it would treat the degree at APRN licensure.
What license must a Vermont preceptor hold for a Graceland student?
The board's FAQ calls for a Vermont license in good standing, with no encumbrance, held by an APRN or a physician. Graceland's Appendix B asks your preceptor for license details too, and Graceland reviews every preceptor before the site is approved, so collect them early.
Can a physician assistant precept a Graceland student in Vermont?
No. Graceland excludes physician assistants from precepting in all its tracks, and the Vermont board's FAQ shuts PAs out of APRN precepting as well. Aim for an APRN or physician experienced in your track's population; who cannot precept you lists Graceland's other exclusions.
Do I need a Vermont RN license if I move there mid-program?
Yes. The multistate license from your old compact home state carries you only until Vermont becomes your primary residence; after that, apply for Vermont's own license and send Graceland a new board verification. The relocation guide lists what else to settle first.
